Alumni of historically black universities respond to Barbour's merger proposal
(WTVA) - Mississippi Valley State University alumnus Don Stewart of Pontotoc was very blunt when asked his response to his school possibly being merged with Jackson State University.

"Before we let them merge these three schools, they'll have a merry Christmas in hell," said Stewart.

His comment came just days after Governor Haley Barbour went public with a proposal to merge his alma mater and Alcorn State University with Jackson State.

Barbour's plan is aimed at saving money, but Stewart thinks otherwise.

"The money you are going to lose fighting this thing in court will probably be ten times the money you're hoping to save merging these schools," said Stewart.

Meanwhile, Alcorn State alumna Emily Long of Tupelo says she's livid with the proposal.

One reason she wants ASU to stay as is has to do with its historical significance.

"I lived three blocks from the 'W,' but I could not attend the 'W.' I could go there to clean, or wash or see after girls, but I could not take classes there," said Long.

Any plan to merge universities would need legislative approval, and it's unclear if that approval will come when the Mississippi Legislature meets early next year.
